The most famous of these escapes was made by 19-year-old guard Conrad Schumann on August 15, 1961; just the third day of the wall’s construction. Since the “wall” was really just piles of barbed wire at that point, Schumann jumped over the wire in his uniform while toting his machine gun. A photographer caught Schumann’s flying leap, and the jump to freedom became an iconic Cold War image. Schumann eventually settled in the southwestern state of Bavaria and worked as a machine operator. He committed suicide in 1998.

The pain of losing someone truly close to you eventually will fade. But the memories are forever. I think the one that hits us the most is the fact that we know they won’t be coming back. That’s what breaks me down the most. And the memories, the memories just make it all worse. there won’t be another smile like there’s. There won’t be another laugh like there’s, there won’t be another time where we can reminisce about the good times. We’re just left lonely with a feeling of debt to them. Wishing we could have done whatever could’ve helped to keep that person here. But death is going to happen. We can’t hide or run away from it. It’s apart of the circle of life. For example a flower is growing, soon as it’s fully grown it’s seeds fall off. It’ll produce new flowers. Shrivel up and die just like us. We’re born, we grow up, have kids, grow old and than die. I know losing someone is hard, but we should feel glad that we got to be apart of their life. Out of all the people in the world it was you who they got to spend their life with. That is something i’ll always keep in mind. Something i’ll forever cherish.

Meet Irena Sendler (1910-2008)
She was a 98 year-old Polish woman at her time of death. During World War II, Irena worked in the Warsaw Ghetto as a plumbing/sewer specialist. She dedicated herself to  smuggle Jewish children out. Infants were carried in the bottom of the tool box she used and older children in a burlap sack she had in the back of her truck.
She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids’ and infants’ noises. Irena managed to smuggle out and save 2500 children during this time
She eventually was caught and the Nazis broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and in a glass jar buried under a tree in her backyard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and reunited some of the families but most had been killed. She then helped those children get placement into foster family homes or adopted.
In 2007, Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected.
Al Gore won for presenting a slide show on Global Warming.
